Why is the maintenance of your car filters so important?

When servicing your car, a change of filters is a must: oil, air and fuel filters. Are you familiar with their functions and the frequency of their maintenance? Here’s everything you need to know…

The Oil Filter

Its purpose is to retain all the impurities circulating in the oil as it passes through the engine. The filter thus maintains good oil quality and density, to avoid clogging the engine and to lubricate it perfectly. It is highly recommended to change the oil filter at least once a year. A used oil filter will leak particles into the engine, causing it to quickly wear out.

The Air Filter

The function of the air filter is to guarantee clean air for optimal combustion. It also helps to reduce noise pollution from the engine. The air filter should be changed every 20,000 km (the frequency may vary based on the use of the vehicle, the quality of the oil and the way you drive). Should you have any difficulties starting your car, hear noises or feel vibrations, you should replace it. However, these symptoms are not systematic. A worn-out air filter causes increased fuel consumption (higher emissions), increased noise pollution and premature wear of the injectors and moving parts of the engine.

The Fuel Filter

This filter protects the engine system and all components from particles in the fuel. In the case of petrol cars, the filter mainly protects the injection system. On the other hand, for diesel cars, it eliminates impurities and isolates water from the fuel. The replacement frequency of the fuel filter varies according to the make and model of your vehicle. A dirty filter will lead to fuel starvation and engine failure. Though the car may still start, the quality of the filter can no longer be guaranteed. The fuel filter is changed more frequently in diesel engines than in petrol engines since diesel engines contain more various and harmful substances.

Bottom line: Maintenance and replacement are important! Make sure you keep an eye on these filters!
