You frequently go mad when drivers commit mistakes while at the wheel. But have you ever stopped for a while to take stock of how you too have developed bad driving habits, albeit unconsciously? Checking your phone or forgetting the turn signal… Here are some common glitches that you should always avoid while driving.

 The most common mistake is to overlook basic safety guidelines even before you start off. However much you are in a hurry to hit the road, make sure your seatbelt is buckled, your seat is properly adjusted, and your side mirrors are correctly positioned. Trying to manoeuvre these operations while driving can pose serious risks for you, for fellow passengers as well as other road users. 

Get that hand off the gearshift!

 You may have the wrong tendency of keeping one hand on the gearshift. This is a dangerous driving error because it takes away control from the steering wheel. As a result, the balance of the vehicle could go awry. Remember that exerting pressure on the gearshift lever can also cause premature wear, thus compromising the gearbox mechanism.

 Stick to your lane!

 A car that constantly changes lanes to move quickly and save time is a public threat. Besides creating stress and nervousness among other motorists, such bad conduct can cause serious accidents. Stay in your left lane except when overtaking.

 Use those turn signals

 For Heaven’s sake those turn signals are meant to be used! Besides, using them before entering a lane is mandatory. Flasher lights allow other motorists to anticipate your next action. Also, systematically signal your left or right turn. More than a preventive gesture, it is a safety mechanism.

Keep safety distances

This can be one of the most dangerous driving mistakes, as drivers’ reactions in traffic – downtown or on high-speed highways – can be unpredictable. Sudden braking, bumps or avoidable accidents can occur. Therefore, it is important you maintain safe distances.

Brake sparingly

Do not  ride your brakes. Instead, pay attention to the road and apply the brake only when it is necessary. If you are maintaining a safe distance from the car in front of you, then you will be able to tell when they have reduced their speed and as a result, you can ease off the accelerator. If you are constantly having your foot on the brake, then the drivers behind you won’t be able to tell if you are just brake-riding or slowing down.
