Public infrastructure: Major road network projects underway

The vista of the public road network of the island has improved exponentially over the past few years with new road infrastructure being constructed or upgraded. New projects about to be implemented and several others in the pipeline are about to transform Mauritius into a countrywide worksite.

As of date, six projects are on the cards with bidding exercises already under way, of which the Quay D flyover is, size-wise, the most important. This busy area is a major access point for the port surroundings and is currently operating beyond capacity.

The Road Development Authority (RDA) has identified scope for further improvement in the adjoining region, from Port Louis Centre to the port area along Motorway M2, with a view to eliminate the Quay D roundabout and improve traffic flow through the construction of the flyover.

A1-M1 Bridge

A bridge spanning the ravine between Sorèze and Coromandel linking the A1-M1 road is underway. This road will allow motorists coming from the West to access Port Louis and the East without making a diversion via Grand River North West or Rose-Hill.

Bois Chéri Bypass

A new 1.6 km-long single carriageway road, the Bois Chéri Bypass, is also under construction. It aims at bypassing the village, thus avoiding the heavily busy area and providing an alternative access for motorists wishing to travel south.

Wooton Junction

The Grade Separated Junction at Wooton is also part of the traffic management plan to improve traffic flow to the north and south. The aim is to reduce traffic congestion and travel time along the M1 motorway and the Quartier Militaire (B6) on both sides of the Wooton interchange by providing an uninterrupted traffic flow.

Other road projects include the upgrading of the B28 road from Beau Champ to Bel Air, the construction of the Flic-en-Flac Bypass from Xavier to Pierrefonds and a bridge at Baie du Tombeau.
