Summer rains: Simple tips to avoid aquaplaning

It never rains but it pours! This is so true of Mauritius during the often-unpredictable summer downpours. The first casualties are obviously the roads which are readily flooded to the great dismay of drivers. The risks of aquaplaning are glaring and warrant care and vigilance. Here are a few tips for a safe drive during treacherous weather.

Aquaplaning or hydroplaning happens on two occasions. First, during heavy rainfall when water accumulates and forms puddles on the road. Second, when it drizzles. The water then mixes with the oil residue naturally present on the road, making the road slippery.

Furrows: deeper the better

Under such climatic conditions, the tyres are key to safe driving. Their hollow structures allow adequate drainage and so are ideal for dislodging the excess water when driving on wet roads. The deeper these grooves, the more they evacuate water. However, if they are worn, you may lose the full contact of your wheels to the road surface.

Ruts and puddles usually collect water. While driving, avoid them as much as possible.

Steady rather than speedy!

Too much acceleration causes the front wheels to have the least contact with the ground. In such a situation, no matter how much you manoeuvre the steering wheel, you will feel the car is not turning at all. This is called understeer and occurs even in dry weather. If the road is slippery, it can be extremely dangerous as it can end up provoking a nasty spin. Keep your speed reasonable to be always in control of your vehicle. It is safer to remain steady rather than being too speedy!

Brisk brakes wreak havoc

Sudden braking can lead to skidding if the car’s deceleration is too great. On wet surfaces, any skidding will turn into aquaplaning thus causing undue havoc. To counter this, it is advisable to brake intermittently. Apply the brakes and then release them to regain grip. Repeat the process until the car comes to a complete halt.

In any hydroplaning situation, immediately release the accelerator and turn the wheels parallel to the car. This also helps in regaining grip and therefore better control of the vehicle.

It is recommended to keep your headlights on while driving during heavy rains. This way you can see and be seen better!
