Besides flooding, those summer torrential rains bring in their wake an abnormally high rate of humidity that serves as a predilection for mould and mildew in your car. You need to literally get to the bottom of it to free yourself from those nasty stenches!

First and foremost, you need to thoroughly clean your car’s interior. Focus specifically on the floor mats and carpets. It is very often in these bottom areas that mould and mildew, responsible for musty smells in your car, take hold.

Don’t hesitate to run your hands over the various surfaces to check every nook and cranny. Also pay special heed to the dashboard, plastic surfaces, ventilation grills, ceiling and seats. We know that’s quite an ordeal but it’s not over yet!

Bicarb and vinegar

Once you have identified the breeding ground of those tiny monsters, rush to the kitchen and grab that secret weapon – baking soda! Sprinkle this humble but efficient product on the infested areas. Allow it to act until it thoroughly absorbs the bad smells. Hoover out the treated areas.

Baking soda also comes in handy for eliminating tobacco, petrol or dog odours!

For more stubborn mould, go back to the kitchen and catch hold of some undiluted white vinegar and place it in your car for at least one hour. You may afterwards spray some air freshener to ward off the hangover vapour. For hard or soft surfaces apply a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda, half a cup of vinegar and four litres of warm water.

Believe it or not, for an express riddance of persistent odours, keep some espresso coffee inside your car!
