Motor Oil: Four points you should know!

Their main function is to prevent corrosion, and help your engine run smoothly, yet choosing the right one may seem like a tough task. Here is a quick breakdown to help guide you along the track to finding your perfect fit.

  • Your car knows best

In your user manual, you will find instructions explaining the best type of oil for your motor engine. It usually indicates the preferred weight of the oil to be chosen. Weight relates to the viscosity of the oil which plays a key part in the functioning and preservation of your engine.

  • A matter of viscosity

This is an indicator of how well a fluid resists to flow. In short, any motor oil is thicker when cool, and more liquid when heated. The measure index is presented in a number before “w” indicating a first temperature in fahrenheit, followed by another number. The higher the second number, the more resistant the oil is to thinning, which is good as it will maintain a better film of lubrication on the parts it is supposed to protect.

  • It’s all on the labels

Brands displaying a starburst symbol show that the oil has been tested by the American Petroleum Association (API). This indicates that the oil passed a series of tests, one of which is for high-temperature deposits, indicated by the “S-L” mark.

  • Synthetic or conventional

The main difference is the oil used: conventional oils are made from organic materials in comparison to synthetic oils which use additional chemical compounds. Conventional oil is generally better for new cars, and features different viscosity options. Synthetic oils, on the other hand, are full of chemicals and have to pass more stringent tests. Their use is to boost the performance in luxury and performance cars, for a longer lasting effect, and better protection against deposits.
