2019 overview: The vehicle fleet in Mauritius

2019 was the year of advancement in the transport sector, with the rise of electric vehicles and the coming of the Metro Express. Here are some key points on how the automobile scene has changed for that year.

Increase in the fleet

According to the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA)* site, 180 electric vehicles have been registered from 2011 to November 2019 and 13,452 new and second-hand imported hybrid vehicles from 2009 to November 2019. As for registered new and second-hand imported vehicles from January to November 2019, they amount to 26,786. For new vehicles, 809 have been registered in 2019, from January to November. Overall, from 2008 to September 2019, the number of vehicles has shifted from 351 409 à 574 772 – which brings us to an increase of  63,6 %.  

Trends in Bank Loans forecast an additional increase

When it comes the Bank of Mauritius report “Bank Loans to Other Non Financial Corporations, Households and Other Sectors, End-November 2019”, grants to land transport amounted to Rs 969 million, with Rs 957 million allocated in Mauritian rupees and Rs 11 million in foreign currencies.

What does our current fleet look like?

According to the Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics (Island of Mauritius) January-June 2019 report from Statistics Mauritius website, the composition of the Mauritian fleet goes as follows: 

At the end of June 2019, the fleet consisted of 52.5% (298,543) cars, double cab pickups and dual purpose vehicles and 37.7% (214,482) auto/motor cycles. The remaining 9.8% comprised vans (28,730), lorries and trucks (15,801), buses (3,091) and other vehicles (8,232). At the end of June 2019, there were 214,482 motor cycles and auto cycles. 

Brands: Who is leading?

Regarding brands, the 5 leading registered in November 2019 are:

  1. Toyota – 146 vehicles, including 76 cars
  2. Nissan – 94 vehicles, including 49 cars
  3. Kia – 92 vehicles, including 86 cars
  4. Mitsubishi – 71 vehicles, including 32 cars
  5. Suzuki – 63 vehicles, including 63 cars
